A Marine Expeditionary Unit is a Marine Air Ground Task Force constructed around a reinforced infantry ballation, a composite Marine aircraft squadron, and a MEU Service Support Group. The Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is a task-organized force, usually commanded by a Lieutenant Colonel or Colonel, built to meet the requirements of a specific situation. It can function as part of a joint task force, as the lead echelon of the Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB), or alone. Up until 2014 the MEU was the standard deployment force for Marines afloat however since that time MEUs have been superceeded by MEBs. Today most MEUs are found as detached forces from a MEB afloat.
